Ringworm in Adults

Because there is several different type of ringworm, many adults can suffer from several forms. It can affect the skin on almost any part of the body, but it also affects the hair and hair follicles. However, ringworm can affect anyone, of any age and of any sex. It is not a discriminatory condition and its severity depends on the person who has it and where it is located on the body.

This type of infection is called ringworm because of the way it looks, not because it is some type of worm that invades the body. Ringworm can be passed from person to person, from animal to person and from objects to people so it can be contracted very easily if you have come in contact with someone or something that has been affected.

The different types of ringworm that you can contract are:

  • Majocchi’s Granuloma – This type of infection is normally a deeper type of fungal infection in the hair, hair follicles and the skin. It occurs most often in those women who shave under their arms and their legs.
  • Tinea Corporis Gladitorum – This is the given name for a certain type of ringworm that is spread in the wrestling world with contact of the skin between the wrestlers.
  • Tinea Imbricate – This type of infection is a type of tinea corporis which is generally found in Asia, the South Pacific and South and Central America.

Normally adults who end up with ringworm can be affected on several parts of their bodies:

  • Scalp
  • Face
  • Bearded area
  • Groin
  • Feet
  • Finger nails and toe nails
  • Underarms

This is because the fungi that causes ringworm lives and thrives in warm, moist places and most of these places are breeding grounds for the fungi to grow. Prevention is the best measure for ringworm but when you do find yourself infected with it, there are steps you can take to help cure it for good.

If you do find that you have some form of ringworm it is vital that you begin treating the area that is affected. If you don’t treat the ringworm, chances are you will end up with an infection more severe than what you started with initially. Untreated ringworm can open the door to other infections and diseases.  Do not underestimate it!

There are creams, ointments and lotions that you can purchase over the counter to treat your ringworm. Talk to a pharmacist at your local drugstore to help find the best cure for you and choose whatever will work the best for you. If you try an over the counter form of treatment and you don’t see any results, you should contact your physician so that he can prescribe a medication that will work for you.

It is easy to get ringworm, but it is also a condition that is easily treated. Don’t suffer if you don’t have to. Get the treatment and you should see the ringworm begin to fade within a few weeks.
